Highworth Elizabethan May Day Market

PRESS RELEASE Highworth ELIZABETHAN MAY DAY MARKET SATURDAY 30TH APRIL 2011 Following the huge success of Highworth’s Medieval Market day last year we are going one better this year. Everyone is invited to our Elizabethan May Day Market, in the Market Square, starting at 10am.

Lots of activities are planned for the day including Morris Dancers, Jack in the Green, Jesters, Fire Performer, Punch and Judy and Madrigals. Come and try your hand at Maypole Dancing; failing that you can try a workshop in traditional Elizabethan dancing. You will also be able to see the fabulous performance of Highworth’s own Urban Morris Kidz group.

There will be market stalls in the High Street offering traditional tastings and remedies and Andrews, the local prize winning butchers will do an ox roast. Or, try Baldrick’s Bangers at the BBQ. ‘Sausages with a bite’ made to a traditional recipe. Watch local artisans demonstrate Elizabethan skills.

Children can enjoy the farm animals and see a dancing bear. They can watch Punch and Judy or try our Elizabethan Quiz. Win a prize with the best Elizabethan costume.

In the afternoon the Spanish Armada will take place between teams from local pubs and clubs. There will be activities in the church and a display of genuine documents and toys from the Elizabethan period in the community room.

The actual events will run from 10am to approximately 4pm.

In the evening Missin’ Rosie, Highworth’s prize winning band have invited their musical friends along to the Market Square to play for you. This will run from 6.30pm to 10.30pm. The Elizabethan Market will be another exciting, not to be missed fun filled day. Oh, and remember to behave yourself or your head may be on a pole in the High Street! Watch out!
