Tournament was a success
3:41pm Monday 29th September 2008 in Shrivenham News
SHRIVENHAM'S annual mixed floodlit tournament was blessed with fine weather and proved a resounding success.
This year's competition was sponsored by Colt Cars (Mid-West) and saw new champions and a new name on the perpetual trophy.
Abingdon Town beat a team from hosts Shrivenham in the final.
Rodbourne Cheney, previous winners of the competition since it was launched in 2005 and supported by Mitsubishi, did not defend the title on this occasion.
Fourteen teams entered the 2008 tournament and were divided into two sections playing over four nights.
The top two in each group progressed to the semi-finals on the last evening with the winners meeting in the grand final.
For the first time, three Shrivenham teams reached the semi-finals but still failed to produce a winner.
Both semi-finals proved to be onesided affairs. Peter Rogers' rink from Abingdon won the first over 12 ends, beating Hazel Hembling's quartet 15-2.
The other semi, an all-Shrivenham affair, saw the Winskill's rink defeat Bill Morse's foursome 20-4.
And in the grand final, over 12 ends, the visiting quartet from Abingdon ranout 16-12 victors.
They received £240 while the Winskill family rink had the consolation of collecting the runners-up prize of £120.
In the play-off for third and fourth place Morse beat Hembling 11-4. They received £60 and £40 respectively.
