Swindon Walcot and Parks Community Group, with help from Buckhurst Park Community Centre, the neighbourhood wardens and a community grant from Swindon Borough Council were able to put on two very successful Christmas parties for isolated older residents and some primary age children last week. The older residents joined in the singing of songs of their youth played by the OK Reunited band and one or two even got up to have a jive! There was also festive food, lots of raffle prizes and a game of bingo. The children were entertained at their party by John Williams who conjured up some magic and got many of the children spinning plates t (don't try this at home with the best china!!). There was lots of food, games to play and a gift for each child at the end of the party. SWAP would like to thank the residents and neighbourhood wardens who came along to help with the setting up, drink making, washing up and clearing up at both parties and we hope that all our partygoers had a great time.

Due to some of the parents feeling they do not have to pay their fees, the Carousel Pre School Nursery at The Dome in Walcot may have to close. It is a ridiculous situation that the young children, including mine, who attend and enjoy playing with friends could be the ones to suffer and miss out. Apparently in the past when they have chased parents for outstanding funds, the parents just withdrew their children and went elsewhere (to no doubt do the same thing). I do wonder if some who are not working, see it as a free child minding service while they have their free time to watch Jeremy Kyle. These parents will, no doubt, be the first to complain if the Pre-School closes but show little or no interest in doing anything to help or take part in parent / child activities.

On a wet Wednesday in March SWAP members, the neighbourhood wardens, community police officers, Jonathan Wilshaw (Great Western Forest) and some students from Dorcan Academy and Churchfields
Academy went out onto the Marlowe Avenue end of Buckhurst Recreation Field and planted a fruit and nut copse of young trees. The mood was cheerful despite the weather and we all worked together to
improve the local environment with trees obtained through the Big Tree grant from the Forestry Commission. Our thanks go to all those who participated and to the committee of the Buckhurst Park
Community Centre for allowing us to provide some much needed refreshments afterwards. Some larger trees were also planted later in the week by Swindon Commercial Services. Protection has been put
up around the trees and we hope that these efforts will enable present and future residents to enjoy the improved environment that these trees will hopefully provide.
