FASHION students at New College took to the catwalk to strut their stuff, wowing the audience wearing their own creations.

A highlight of the academic year, the fashion show, called New Couture, dazzled the audience with a rainbow of colours and a wealth of talent.

The show gave members of the public, friends and families the opportunity to view inspirational pieces by the college's talented young designers.

The afternoon show last week featured floral, decorative effects, confectionary themes and window displays.

One of the young designers featured was 18-year-old Lyndsay Hodges, who has just been accepted onto a fashion design degree course at Rochester University.

Lyndsay said: "It's taken lots of hard work and preparation but the fashion shows are great fun and create a fantastic atmosphere."

Students had been working hard to design, model and choreograph the show and have produced unique pieces such as a dress made from used crisp packets, a dress that looks like a giant cake and a line of "domestic'' pieces using materials such as latex gloves.

Kate Gale, one of the lecturers co-ordinating the event, said: "The students work very hard to produce some excellent pieces of work; the diversity of the pieces is amazing.

"Our A Level textiles students go onto a wide range of prestigious careers so this show really is an opportunity for members of the public to view the early work of the Stella McCartneys and Julien MacDonalds of the future.

"One of our ex-students, Leigh Montague, is now designing menswear pieces for Marks and Spencer and another, Louise Charles, has just got a highly coveted position working with the acclaimed contemporary textile artist Alice Kettle. A lot of the students taking part in this year's fashion show have a very bright future ahead of them."
