Bloodchild by Tim Bowler is a bit of a supernatural mystery.
It tells the story of Will, a troubled boy who wakes up in a country lane.
He can’t see and can only mumble his replies and listen while a girl frantically tries to call for an ambulance.
He manages to catch a glimpse of her, and memorises her voice. A girl with a shock of black hair and deep blue eyes with a melodic voice.
When he is returned to his parents, minus his memory of whatever happened before the ‘incident’, he is told that the girl fled before the ambulance arrived to help him.
Will is determined to seek out his saviour, but is plagued by disturbing visions and has a series of blackouts from which he wakes to find his bedroom decorated with scribbles on the walls and sheets of paper lying everywhere.
Along his way to find out all the lies and truths of the haunting area, he gains allies and friends, as well as enemies, including a gang of murd-erous balaclava-clad men.
Will befriends the local tramp, Crow, and his son, Muck. With the whole of the village angrily in tow, Will seeks the help of Muck, the mysterious, dirty boy who harbours a lot of hidden secrets. But Muck is determined to keep his mouth closed, and Will is desperately running out of time.
This is a terrifying, fantastic book which had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. It got me thinking, working it all out in my head.
The ending is worth waiting for, with a twist of betrayal and mystery, bits making me smile and others proving the book a real tear-jerker.
I hope all the other readers find it as interesting as I did. I’d rate it 9/10 on my scale, seeing as the book is really brilliant but just a little bit too graphic for my liking. Tim Bowler has created a perfect mixture of horror, romance, comedy (surprisingly!) and mystery, inventing a whole new world for my imagination to venture into.
