THE Liberal Democrats have now revealed who will stand in the General Election on June 8 in North and South Swindon.

Their announcement brings the number of names to five in each of the seats with the Conservatives, Labour, UKIP and the Greens having already chosen their candidates.

Standing in his second General Election in South Swindon will be Stan Pajak, a councillor for 32 years and the leader of the Lib Dem group on the council.

Mr Pajak said: “I am so pleased and honoured to have been made the Lib Dem candidate for South Swindon in the June General Election.

“My whole life has centred round my home town. My family grew up here and my greatest joy has been contributing to the life of our town through my role as a councillor, working in the community and with the wonderful charities of town.

“The election is a real opportunity to change the direction of our country and provide the people with a government that represents 100 per cent of the people, not just the leave voters amid the failure and terminal decline of a Labour opposition.

“I am standing up for an open, tolerant and united Swindon and targeting where our town is failing in education, health and social care, housing, a town centre and heritage to be proud of and listening to its residents.”

Mr Pajak’s many years in political life stands in contrast to the party’s choice in North Swindon.

Liz Webster had a career in Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising in the heady days of the 1980s before moving out to the countryside on the edge of Swindon in search of a better family life.

She set up her own business and now runs Poppins, a nanny and household staff recruitment agency.

In 2007, a hammer attack at The Ridgeway School left Liz’s son Henry with brain damage.

She began a long and extensive lobbying campaign to hold the school and the local authority to account, culminating in a Serious Case Review and a Judicial Review.

Ms Webster attributes her journey to standing in a General Election to the shock result of the referendum in June.

She has headed up a team of campaigners working to secure protections for EU citizens when the UK does eventually leave the European Union.

“I’m absolutely thrilled and energised to be standing as Liberal Democrat candidate in North Swindon against one of the career politicians, a champion of Brexit, who is more focused on Westminster rather than local issues,” she said.

“Vote for change and to bring the direction back to safety, openness and fairness on June 8. Send a loud message to Theresa May that you don’t want an extreme hard Brexit which will see us crash out of the single market and destroy the NHS and public services.

“The Liberal Democarts are the only party united against extreme Brexit.”
