10 THINGS TO DO IN AND AROUND SWINDON THIS WEEKEND

1. Santa Claus will be stopping off at the Central Library on Saturday from 11am to 11.30am. He will deliver story times and rhymes before jumping into his sleigh on Christmas Eve. The event is free. Call 01793 463238.

2. The Winter Solstice Run takes place at Chiseldon Recreation Ground on Sunday from 10am. A 100 per cent off-road 5k, 10k & 13k charity run along the ancient Ridgeway to Barbury Castle in aid of the Spinal Injuries Association. 3. Dick Whittington at the Wyvern on Saturday and Sunday, starring Nigel Havers as King Rat. To book tickets, call 01793 524481. 

4. A Christmas Song Service will be held in the Town Gardens, Old Town, on Sunday from 2pm, raising money for the Great Western Hospital's children's ward.

5. Live nativity shop window displays at 11.30am and 2,30pm at The Gate in Havelock Square, including live readings from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe along with live nativity window displays to celebrate the Christmas season. It is the first time live window displays have been used in Swindon and local volunteers and customers have all offered to be live models.

6. Swindon & Cricklade Railway Santa Specials all weekend, from 11am to 4pm. Take the children to ride on a train and meet Santa in his grotto. Trains run approximately every 40 minutes.  Tickets are £7 for adults, £10 for children (with gift), £6 for seniors and £32 for a family ticket (two adults, two children).

7. Get in the festive mood at the Outlet Village on Saturday, where there will be Victorian Carol singers from 11am to 5pm, as well as a chance to meet Santa's reindeer outside the food quarter from 1pm to 3pm.

8. Join the junior and youth members of Kentwood Choir in their first sparkling Christmas show at the Arts Centre on Saturday from 7.30pm. Sheila Harrod presents those Kentwood Kids in It's Beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Featuring your favourite Christmas songs, fun, laughter and a mince pie and punch. Tickets are £12. 9. Swindon Folksingers Club World Famous Christmas Party, will be held at the Ashford Road Club tonight from 8.15pm, complete with singers, musicians and the equally famous Swindon Folksingers Club Mummers Play. Call Eric Stott on 01793 521301.

10. A Christmas Party is being held for North Swindon residents on Saturday at the Haydon Centre between 1pm and 3pm. The party will include Christmas food and games for youngsters of all ages. For more details and to purchase tickets visit www.nscommunitygroup.org.uk
