A TINY advert reproduced in Rewind has prompted a reader to share some photos of Swindon’s past.

Last week’s edition reproduced the front page of our edition for Wednesday, April 17, 1957.

In the top corner was an advert for Great Western Clothiers in Faringdon Road, which traded from 1899 until 1987.

It was spotted by Jo Fisher, 76, who lives in a housing complex in Moredon.

A fellow resident is Dennis Morris, who worked at the business from 1942 until its closure when he was 61.

Jo said: “I showed him the page and he said: ‘Oh, marvellous! I remember that.’ He gave me some photos of the shop as it used to be.

“I was very pleased to see the old pictures and the advert. They bring back memories.”

When the shop closed in 1987, we ran an article with a photo of Mr Morris and his wife, Sylvia.

We said: “When Dennis Morris was apprenticed to Great Western Clothiers more than 40 years ago he vowed he would eventually own the men’s outfitting business.

“That was in 1942, the middle of World War Two, and one of Dennis’ earliest jobs was to go out and pull the shutters down on the double-fronted shop every time the air raid sirens went off.”

By the late 1960s he was a partner in the business, and in 1964 he became its outright proprietor.
