WHEN a most famous adult entertainment star came to Swindon 33 years ago her posters were banned from the buses.

These days Fiona Richmond, 69, is in the hotel business, with properties in Britain and the Caribbean.

Back in July of 1981, though, she was one of the most notorious figures in the country thanks to a string of risque – for the time – films and books.

She was touring theatres with a nudity-infused sex comedy produced by Paul Raymond, a strip club owner and publisher of adult magazines.

Some of the advertising fell foul of Swindon’s censors, as we revealed in a story headlined: “NAUGHTY FIONA IS OFF THE BUSES.”

We said: “Sex queen Fiona Richmond won’t be baring all on Swindon’s buses.

“The council has slapped a ban on saucy posters advertising the comedy Wot! No Pyjamas! at the Wyvern later this month.

“Instead, passengers will see handbills containing what the council describes as scantily-clad beauties.”

The Wyvern accused the council of prudery, but a pun-loving council spokesman replied: “It’s all a storm in a B-cup.

“We tried to be reasonable. The posters originally submitted, showing full-frontal photographs, were considered hardly suitable for display on Thamesdown Transport buses.

“However, small handbills featuring drawings of scantily-clad beauties are considered acceptable, and will go on show in bus windows from this weekend.”

The Adver archives include a copy of the original poster, possibly the only one still in existence, and we must admit that the council had a point. We dare say most would have been stolen from buses by adolescent boys before anybody had a chance to be offended, though.

Fiona gave us a brief interview, during which she promoted her latest book, From Here To Virginity, which was due for publication that October.

Later, our theatre reviewer wrote: “The play is titillating, fast and funny.”

The Adver ran a competition the prize for which was to meet the star before a performance. Readers were asked to name the show in order to be entered in a draw.

It was won by senior citizens Joan and Geoff Hayes, of Faringdon Road, and we photographed them sharing a glass of wine with Fiona.

What they thought of Wot! No Pyjamas! went unrecorded.
