THE May 2015 General Election will be remembered for many things, but one of the most striking is the number of celebrities recruited by the various parties in bids to promote themselves.

“Send somebody from the telly,” the logic seemed to be, “and people will vote for us.”

In Swindon the visit of Eddie Izzard, in support of Swindon South Labour candidate Anne Snelgrove, was intended to drum up support for her in the following month’s poll. The comedian proved at least as popular as the leaders of the two major parties, both of whom would also head for Swindon in April.
