On a cold, wet July evening, dreams of summer appear nonsensical. But the Gate Crash Theatre provided an alternative on Friday, with their adaption of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
The festival themed interpretation, directed by Anna Friend, was a modernised version without loss of meaning or humour.
The sensational lighting, costumes, and set – predominantly made from recycled items — added an additional edge to the actors’ performance, transporting the audience to a world of unrequited love and mischievous fairies.
Kiera C Georgeson, dominated the stage and laughs with her stand-out performance as Bottom.
The physical use of comedy, as well as the actor’s enjoyment was prevalent throughout the performance.
Both cast and lighting made full use of the Arts Centre’s intimate space, with theatre walls decorated with fairy lights. The use of head dresses on cast members, against a lit stage, created a captivating silhouette and added to the dreamy ambience. The production was original and captivating. EMMA SMITH
