Swindon Artswords Reading Group's reading list


The 82nd monthly meeting of the Swindon Artswords Reading Group took place on the evening of 9th December at Lower Shaw Farm. The hens were on their roosts and no snow was falling.

We discussed the ’07 Booker Prize winner The Gathering by Anne Enright. It was reckoned a good read, by most; well-liked by some, who thought it rooted in reality; but not so pleasing to others, who thought it a touch gloomy. It made for very lively talk, and left little time to plan for ’09 – but we did!

Here are the books chosen. – All meetings are held at Lower Shaw Farm, Old Shaw Lane, West Swindon, SN5 5PJ. Start time is 7.30pm. - The cost is £2 per session.

Blob 7.30pm Tuesday 13th January ‘09 – The Picture of Dorian Gray Oscar Wilde - classic book that creates classic arguments. Is it an instructive moral tale or a decadent story of immorality? You decide!

Blob 7.30pm Tuesday 17th February – The Moon and Sixpence W Somerset Maugham - do some artists find conventional morality stultifying? Why do some artists prefer the southern hemisphere to the northern one? Maugham has an answer or two.

Blob 7.30pm Tuesday 24th March - Footsteps Richard Holmes - How do we tell another person’s story: through their eyes, or our own? romantic’s view and biographical bits about key English writers.

Blob 7.30pm Tuesday 21st April – A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers Xiaolu Guo - languages mean different understandings, especially between lovers. In fact, different languages can lead to misunderstandings but also clarifications and explorations!

Blob Monday 4th May to Sunday 17th May – Swindon Festival of Literature! - Mmm . . .

Blob 7.30pm Tuesday 23rd June – Falling Man Don DeLillo - A book born out of the smoke, ash, and tragedy of the burning towers of 9/11. An exploration of an altered perception of the world, society, and relationships.

Blob 7.30pm Tuesday 28th July – The Siege of Krishnapur J G Farrell - a book set in India in the nineteenth century be both serious and funny? Let’s find out!
