Literacy by Peter Neathway, aged 13

It’s like my pencil’s got a mind of its own
It makes up for my voice’s low tone
I’m finally being known
and I owe it all to literacy
For spreading news of all courtesy
Through words and rhymes
Throughout the New York Times
For demonstrating the magnificent freedom of speech
Helping preachers to preach
And letting teachers teach
We owe it all to literacy
For helping us to be all that we can be
Without it you wouldn’t be you and I wouldn’t be me!
Since we can talk about politics, nature, and practise our own religion
We can talk about a futuristic vision
If this feeling I had to define
I’d say “it lets me express the opinion that is mine”
That is why I owe it all to literacy.
