This Recession is Depressing by Alex Dixon

This recession is depressing.
There’s no food in the cupboards
And my tummy is grumbling.
I’ve just been made redundant,
And the compensation
Ain’t that great.
Still, I mustn’t complain.
I’ve still got my health and my home,
And my cat, called Simone.

I’m not ashamed
To work for my dinner,
By strumming my guitar
In the subway.
Over the sound of underground
Trains, you can hear me.
Playing Beatles tunes
And singing cheerfully
As the passengers hurry by,
trying not to meet my eye.

But I’m not shy,
I give them a big smile
And say ‘have a good day.’
Today I had a happy client- –
He was a Beatles fan,
A suited and booted man,
who threw a fiver in my hat.
Happy days!
I went to Walmart
And bought the bread that
Is on sale – the stuff
That’s almost stale.
And a pint of milk
To wash away my woes.

See, I can’t complain.
I’ve got my health and my home,
And my cat, called Simone,
And a tummy full of milk and bread.
This recession ain’t too bad.
