Coming Home by John Curtis

On that fine day I walked alone
In Wootton Bassett, a small market town
I walked the streets without a care
But something strange was in the air

The town went quiet, birds ceased their song
Something strange was going on
Along the High Street uniforms appeared
The Army, RAF, British Legion – weird

What was it? A parade or fair?
Something strange was in the air
Hundreds of people lined the road
“It’s a special occasion,” I was told

I stood, a stranger on that street
And asked a stranger I chanced to meet
“Why are people standing here alone?”
“Because some more of our boys are coming home.”

I watched the cortege pass along
Between the people, now thousands strong
Their coffins draped with their country’s flags
All young soldiers, only lads

They gave their lives so far away
And now have come back home to stay
They did their duty, now they are home
Honoured by the people of a small Wiltshire town
