Matt Whittaker, of Pets At Home Swindon, writes about keeping reptiles

We all know that dogs make good companions, so what makes reptiles so appealing?

There are loads of reasons; one being the fact that the maintenance of reptiles is straightforward, once their home or vivarium tank is set up. Like other small mammals, their houses will require a full clean out on a regular basis.

However, depending on which type of reptile, you may only be required to feed them with simple foods such as suitable vegetables or insects. Some, such as Crested Geckos, can be kept on a diet of a powder mixed with water or suitable fruit – ideal if you don’t like the thought of feeding live insects!

The nature of the home or vivarium for reptiles lends itself to looking attractive and interesting. For example, Crested Geckos require a tropical enclosure so the set up can be made with live plants and made into a beautiful centrepiece in a room, much like a fish tank.

Reptiles as pets are a great way to educate children about the different climates that are found all around the world and how this affects the animals that inhabit them. Creating a tank fit for a Bearded Dragon, which comes from the dry scrubland and deserts of Australia, will get their imagination going.

Owners are also able to handle their reptiles; species such as the Bearded Dragon are docile and friendly and enjoy interaction with their owners. If certain reptiles are handled regularly, they will even try to climb up to you. Who wouldn’t like to be greeted by an affectionate lizard?
