Matt Whittaker, manager of Pets At Home Swindon, writes about thejoy of keeping guinea pigs

Guinea pigs are lovely, intelligent and inquisitive animals and make really rewarding pets for adults or children (with adult supervision, of course!) Despite their small size, guinea pigs are still a huge responsibility and a long-term commitment.

They can live for five to six years so be sure you can commit to caring for them throughout their whole lives.

If you decide to make a guinea pig part of the family then we recommend you commit to more than one.

Guinea pigs are very social and will be happiest living with at least one other compatible guinea pig.

A good combination is a neutered male with one or more females, or a pair or group of females.

Your guinea pigs will also appreciate human company, so you’ll have to play, stroke or cuddle them every day.

You’ll also need to ensure you provide fresh food and water every day as well as performing regular clean outs and grooming, and be able to cover the costs of veterinary fees, food, housing, bedding and toys.

Your guinea pig’s home will take up a large area of your house and/or garden.

Whether kept indoors or outdoors, their home should consist of a large shelter and exercise area, which should be strong and secure, draught-free, well-ventilated and receive natural light.

As well as hay, grass and plenty of fresh water, vitamin C is essential for guinea pigs – give them a fresh portion of vitamin C enriched guinea pig nuggets and fresh, leafy vegetables daily.

Guinea pigs’ teeth grow constantly so it’s important to provide them with lots of hay and grass.

There’s so much more to know and learn about these wonderful animals, so if you’re considering keeping them as pets our friendly colleagues at Pets At Home will be able to answer all of your questions.
