On stage or off, MARION SAUVEBOIS finds out you will fit right in at drama society IT is all about this business we call show for Wroughton Amateur Dramatics and Musical Society’ actors.

The amateur troupe has had one simple goal since it formed 50 years ago – to entertain.

Members’ commitment to this single principle over the decades is the secret to the society’s longevity.

WADAMS was founded in 1964 under the chairmanship of Dr Peter Gladders.

Sally Parker, of WADAMS, said: “We are a group that was set up 50 years ago to provide entertainment in the village. This is still our goal.

“The society has always regarded itself as being a part of the life of the community, and willingly undertakes requests to entertain various groups and organisations.

“There has always been a shortage of men in the society but nevertheless the productions presented have not lacked in general appeal or variety. We have produced drama, comedy, farce and musicals.”

WADAMS has scooped several awards at the Swindon One Act Festival.

And the group prides itself not only on the quality of actors’ performances but the dedication of its backstage helpers and production team.

“We do two to three productions each year and on occasion four when we have entered the One Act Play festival,” Sally added.

“In the spring we do either a Junior WADAMS production or two one-act plays. “The reason behind one-act plays is to give less experienced actors and directors some experience.

“A new director is given a largely experienced cast and vice versa.

“Every year we put on a pantomime in December.

“The strength of WADAMS has always been the enthusiasm and friendliness of its members. Everyone is welcome in whatever capacity they wish to undertake.”

Adult membership is open to anyone over the age of 16 and junior WADAMS is available for under-16s.

The society meets on Wednesday evenings at Ellendune Centre in Wroughton from 7.30pm for adults or 6.30pm for the juniors.

Junior members, and students under 18, pay an annual fee of £20 plus £1 per week. Adult membership costs £30 per year, plus £1 per week.
