SWINDON could soon have its own BMX track under plans to bring the Moredon Golf Course back to life.

The land has just been open space since it was closed following the leisure transfer last year but the Adver understands talks have taken place between Swindon Borough Council and British Cycling over a possible development.

Discussions are at a very early stage and any development would require a public consultation if an application was submitted.

It is thought the proposal would include a full BMX track, as well as a number of six-a-side football pitches, which would be run by the Wiltshire FA.

Neither British Cycling nor the council would confirm the talks had taken place but Councillor Garry Perkins (Con, Haydon Wick), the cabinet member for economy and regeneration, confirmed there had been interest in the land.

He said: “I can confirm that initial discussions have been held with a national sporting body over the use of the former Moredon Par-3 (course).

“These are at an early stage and things are a long way from being decided.

“If anything does happen then of course it will go out to a full consultation before anything is decided.”

The golf course was initially going to be part of the leisure transfer which saw most of the council-run facilities leased out to private companies.

Broome Manor and Highworth Golf were given to Twigmarket but Moredon was taken out of the deal because it was not profitable and would leave the council responsible for the land.

At the time, it was said other leisure uses for the land were going to be explored, with one option looked at being a plan to turn it into a home for Swindon Town Football Club’s training ground.

The football club have been working with the council to find a training ground in the borough. Around eight sites have been considered and Moredon was among them.

However, after a brief investigation it was ruled out because it did not meet the needs of the club.

Coun Perkins said: “We are trying to help the club to find a local training ground and Moredon was looked at.

“But it is not the big enough and the club want to be able to put a security around in case they reach the Premier League, which means Moredon is not suitable.”

As it stands there is currently no use for the land.
