FASHION fans dived into an aquatic adventure with an Under The Sea themed catwalk show at New College this week.

Mermaids, fish, pirates, and sunken ships were seen floating down the catwalk for the final year project of Level 1, 2 and 3 hair and beauty students from the college’s Distinction salon.

Hair and beauty students teamed up to design every part of the look including hair, make-up, and outlandish outfits.

The slick production included blue and green mood lighting and a marine themed playlist to accompany the 65 models who are family members and friends of the students.

Students in the Distinction Hair, Beauty and Photographic Make-up competition were judged on creativity, technique and showmanship.

The glittering production began when the students were given their first assignment back in September.

Andrea Larter, salon and assessment manager at New College said the 80 students were completely submerged in the creativity process.

“We wanted a theme which gave all the students a lot of scope. Under the sea is such a broad theme that anything is possible," said Andrea.

"You really felt like you were underwater and the night was absolutely magical and very emotional.

“They were responsible for everything, from the make up styles to the hair. They were very adventurous with the looks, it made all of us very proud to see how much they have learnt

“The floor was literally covered in sequins and glitter, every room was full of activity. We were there to support the students but all the hard work and of course the end result was theirs.”

The masterpieces went before a panel of esteemed judges who awarded prizes from brands including Dermalogica, Airbase and OPI.

“We were looking for creativity and the winner on the night was a student who dressed as a lantern fish, this incredible costume made of reinforced wire, blue and green sequins with a decorated mask,” said Andrea.

“It was just incredible how much work went into that and every costume there.”

“It was the best year yet, so next year’s students have a lot to live up to.”

Previous themes have included recycling and the red carpet.

A live charity haircut also took place during the show to help raise money for charity the Little Princess Trust which provides real hair wigs to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland that have been affected by cancer.
