WRITING poetry to promote peace may seem like a challenge for many but not for one fearless 11-year-old who is on a mission to encourage equality.

In the wake of recent weeks which have seen England fans clash at the Euros, 49 people killed in Orlando and MP Jo Cox murdered, Kimmy Shopland from Taw Hill wanted to inspire others to act with kindness.

The St Francis Primary pupil has written a poem, called My Vision of the World in a bid to encourage equality and respect in today’s troubled world.

Kimmy, who wrote the inspiring poem in 10 minutes said she wanted people to respect and appreciate others differences with lines, such as “We need to learn kindness, we need to learn respect and peace, we need to learn to appreciate opinions, and all live in harmony and peace.”

“I’ve been watching the news and seen about the terrorist attacks and Jo Cox and I just thought why can’t everybody get along with each other and work it out. We weren’t made to do that, it’s not right. It makes me feel sad,” Kimmy said.

“People need to understand that everyone is different and has different opinions. We need to appreciate that everyone is different.”

Despite her tender years, the St Francis Primary pupil has crafted an impressive collection of handwritten poems, songs and plays and plans to be an actor or author in the future.

From creating plays with younger brother George, seven, to writing to esteemed playwrights the child prodigy doesn’t let anything hold her back.

Proud mum Debbie: “She has a thirst for knowledge, she always wants to know what’s going on and it did upset her when she saw these things on the news. She doesn’t see why people can’t get along and I know it makes her sad.

“She will literally write constantly, she’ll go off and come back an hour later and present you with a poem she’s written.

“She’s just a dear empathetic girl, she cares so much about others, she wants everyone to get along with everyone else. That’s just the kind of person she is, you can see it in everything she does."

Kimmy first developed a love of writing three years ago and has since branched out into increasingly mature topics such as making dreams come true and the cycle of life.

“As parents we are so proud of her, she’s amazing and I believe she can do anything she wants to do and that she will be a success in whatever she does,” said Debbie.
