STUDENTS at Churchfields Academy have been showing off their artistic skills as part of a day which focused on creative arts.

All pupils in Year 7 took part in the workshops on music, dance, art, textiles and food last Thursday which was organised by creative technology faculty director Mary Ann Harris.

They then showed off their hard work at the end of the day as parents and friends of Churchfields were invited to a special performance and exhibition.

Mrs Harris said she was over the moon at how the day panned out and was very impressed with the standard of work the pupils had produced as part of the day-long event.

She added: “The day was set up by the creative tech team and al staff worked hard to pull together a great day for students and parents. It is unusual for students to have a whole day focusing on one curriculum area and they have all enjoyed the day.”

Many of the workshops were winter-themed and students took inspiration from Andrew Goldsworthy to create art installations made using material found in Lawn Woods. The sculptor and environmentalist is well-known for his use of brightly coloured flowers, pinecones and thorns in his work.

Other students also took motivation from the chilly weather and created winter Olympic themed dances and music pieces.

Mrs Harris added: “I would like to thank the parents for coming to watch and for the work of the staff and students involved who made the day a success.”
