A MEXICAN artist living in Old Town has joined forces with her two brothers for an art exhibition at the Central Library.

Carla Rojas Roa along with her brothers Patricio and Cristobal created a series of artworks inspired by Mexican culture and traditions.

Patricio created oil drawings based on contemporary mythologies, while Cristobal’s pieces are inspired by the gods.

Carla’s works are entitled Nahuals, Shamans and Rituals and inspired by Mexican mythology.

A nahual has the ability to transform either physically or spiritually into animal form while a shaman is an ancient healer.

Carla, 41, from Old Town, created a series of doll-inspired pieces including paintings and fabric dolls.

She said: “When I was growing up I was one of nine children and the priority for my parents was that we would eat and get an education and we didn’t have many toys. I have always loved dolls and it seemed right that I did this.

“I want people to realise there is more to Mexico than the reputation it has, such as crime or drugs. There is strong cultural community there and a huge artistic quarter. I want people to have an experience of that.

“I feel happy and alive when I look at these artworks. They are a part of my heritage and history and art is such an expression of your inner thoughts.

“To be able to create this exhibition with my brothers is fantastic."

Both Patricio and Cristobal live in Mexico and work as a painter and sculptor respectively.

The exhibition, which closes when the library shuts tomorrow, is dedicated to the sibling’s parents - Patricia and Cristobal Rojas Vilchis.
