STEPHEN DAVY-OSBORNE tries two of Old Town’s Thai restaurants to see whether their takeaways were as good as eating in

OLD Town Thai is one of those go-to safe options on Wood Street when you’re looking for a good night out with great quality food.

No-one was more excited than us at Adver Towers when it was announced earlier in 2017 that the restaurant would be branching out into a Thai tapas bar upstairs, and we eagerly pencilled it into our diaries for the review pages of Menu. Sadly, that never came about, so I consoled myself one chilly December evening with a take-away instead.

It seemed a shame not to be dining in, as the restaurant is so inviting, and the staff so friendly and helpful. But having never had a take-away from here we thought we ought to give it a go and see how it stacks up when devoured at home.

My dining companion for the evening ordered the prawn Massaman curry (£8.95) while I went for a pork green curry (also £8.95) we also ordered two sides of coconut rice (£2.95 each).

I do find that Thai restaurants are often a little more expensive than their Chinese counterparts, but given that the quality is often right up there I don’t mind paying a bit more of a premium – even if it means sacrificing a starter or a side.

The upside of these delicious dishes though is that you do want to finish everything on your plate, which you would probably be unable to do if you had loaded yourself up with succulent chicken satays or Thai duck parcels.

I do think my guest chose well – the curry was jam-packed full of flavour and spices, and as he is not a fan of anything too hot, this hit the nail right on the head. Paired with the coconut rice it made a great dish, with the coconut adding a hint of sweetness – and I daresay, a spot of firefighting on his tongue too!

My Thai green curry was enjoyable, but I didn’t love it so much that I wanted to finish it all. This was purely down to personal preference as I am not a huge fan of broccoli, so I wasn’t thrilled to see it in among the cuts of pork, carrots and other vegetables that made up the curry. That said though, I would probably order the dish again, provided I had a willing guest eager to take the broccoli off my hands.
