TWO main courses for £10 is a bargain.

It’s all too easy to spend double that on two takeaway dishes, and in a whirl of plastic bags and cardboard boxes, it can soon feel like you ate £20 in five minutes.

So when we spotted the two for £10 deal on takeaway at Gaetano we were impressed.

Well, we would have been if we weren’t ordering takeaway on one of the only nights the offer doesn’t run – Friday.

Never mind though, I had heard good things about the Italian restaurant, in Victoria Road, and was keen to see if it would live up to the hype.

I went for the mysterious sounding Gaetano pizza, which promises ‘a bit of everything, plus lots of love’ while my boyfriend chose the Americana pizza, which is topped with pepperoni and chillies.

There were also a whole host of pasta and meat dishes on the menu, but I knew I would be jealous of Scott’s pizza if I didn’t have one too.

Using the Just Eat website, we asked for it to be ready for 8.15pm, which it was, and when we got the pizzas home after collecting them from the restaurant, they filled the house with that moreish smell of dough and cheese.

Before Friday night, I had been on a bit of a health kick. I ditched the takeaways in February and March after realising my clothes were feeling a bit tight, and this was the first taste of pizza I had had for months.

What a comeback it was.

Mine was a colourful array of red onions, pepperoni, ham, olives and cheese.

“It actually tastes Italian,” I said after biting into my first slice.

It sounds like a strange thing to say, but it was nothing like the pizzas I was eating before my health kick.

This made the chain restaurant Italian takeaways taste bland, and the taste and texture reminded me of a holiday in Italy several years ago.

The Gaetano pizza carried so much flavour, and had delicious fresh toppings and homemade dough. It didn’t even have the stodgy heaviness that many pizzas carry, which makes you feel oh so guilty afterwards.

It was the perfect way to break a two month takeaway ban – technically I don’t think it was actually unhealthy either.

Scott enjoyed his Americana too – it must have been good because he demolished the lot.

He also had half a garlic baguette to go with it, but said that it wasn’t as good as the pizza.

As an out-of-practice takeaway eater, I only managed half of my dish.

But, we had a quarter each for lunch the next day, so we had got more than our money’s worth.

The pizzas were £8.50 each and the garlic bread was £2.50.

Next time, we will be sure to make the most of the deal, which is available from Sunday to Thursday.
