Market manager Kardien Gerbrands talks about Swindon farmers' markets

MY grandson, who is now seven, has a most unusual taste in foods for someone so young.

This week, when asked what he would like for lunch, he came up with avocado and cucumber sandwiches, and he absolutely loves a mixed green salad!

His favourite food, by his own admission, however, is raspberries. I’ve moved house quite a few times recently and every time I’ve arrived at a new place he says “Are you going to grow some raspberries, Opa?”

I have tried, of course, and they aren’t too difficult to have some success with but it is hard to feed his voracious appetite. He and his four-year-old brother will quite happily tuck away two punnets in no time! You can’t stop them eating healthy food though, can you? It must be encouraged.

Delight and hallelujah then that this Sunday sees the return of raspberries at the Styan’s Family Produce stall.

Slightly later than last year, the raspberries have been held back by the lack of spring rain followed by the lack of summer warmth but now, at long last, we can enjoy super fresh, super quality raspberries right through until September.

Styan’s also have strawberries and gooseberries at the moment and will have cherries, plums, currants and other soft and stoned fruit throughout the season.

Come on down this Sunday between 9.30am and 4pm to the Designer Outlet, get some great local produce and meet all the regular producers who make the market so great.
