LIGHT and cooling, lively and expressive or fruity and round, there are plenty of reasons to polish up your palate and keep the white wine flowing all summer long...

l Nonius Feteasca Regala/Chardonnay 2016, Romania (£5.49, Aldi, in-store)

After years in the doldrums, this huge wine-producing country is back on track and Cramele Recas is the label behind some of Romania’s most affordable and attractive styles.

This blend of chardonnay and a local variety evokes white peach and jasmine with apricot and lime flavours mingling with fresh acidity. Crisp and well ripened, it’s bang on the money, but you’ll need to hurry up - it’s only available until the end of August.

l Morrisons Best Rioja Reserva Blanco 2011, Spain (£6.50, Morrisons, in-store)

Rioja usually signals a plush, dense red, but it also produces excellent whites as this International Wine Challenge Great Value Champion White 2017 proves.

From the word go, it’s rich and succulent with creamy pear, baked apple and lemon flavours framed by blanched almonds and toasty vanilla. With impressive complexity and really good length, it’s a brilliant buy.

l Domaine Des Bouts Cotes du Rhone Villages 2016, France (£9, Tesco)

A notch up the scale from basic Cotes du Rhone, a Villages wine sets the benchmark for quality and value - out of 95 communes spread across the Southern Rhone, only 18 villages can make wines under the label.

Subtle floral notes lead to a silky, smooth palate that’s crisp and elegant with enough citrusy, green fruits and lemony acidity to send a glimmer of freshness with every sip.

l Les Jamelles Pinot Gris 2015, France (£10.99, Majestic)

Les Jamelles is part of Badet Clement’s portfolio of wines and this pinot grigio (gris) is the latest addition to their flagship brand from the sunny Languedoc Roussillon.

With a brisk, citrus character, it displays a lovely balance between lemony, grapefruit flavours and clean minerality with lemon drop and lychee notes.

l McGuigan Bin 9000 Semillon 2016, Hunter Valley, Australia (£13.98, Asda)

One of this winery’s specialities, McGuigan have won the International Wines & Spirits Competition’s Semillon Trophy four times.

A lighter style of white (11% abv), this young semillon has a crisp, zesty acidity that drives the lemony, limey fruit. Linear with a grassy note and vibrant finish, this wine also has ageing potential.

Give it a few years in bottle to mature, and toasty, honeyed undertones will develop... if you have the patience.
