WHOLESOME meals cooked entirely from scratch every day? It’s an aspiration most of us with full time jobs, or children, or otherwise busy lives fail to live up to.

With the best will in the world, when time is short, or we’re tired or just lacking imagination, it’s great to have something handy to stick under the grill or into the oven that is satisfying and simple to prepare.

Finding plant food options that fit the bill and also tastes good has not always been easy, but on a recent trip to the supermarket, I picked up a couple of vegan-friendly dishes made by Gosh! They are on a mission to create healthy food that is also good for the environment, with a food range of over 15 plant-based free-from products, which don’t contain any artificial preservatives, flavours or colour enhancers. The packaging typically uses 70 per cent recycled material

Among their tempting sounding bites, burgers and sausages are spinach and pine nut bites, Sweet Potato & Black Bean Sausages with a hint of chilli & lime and Butternut, Tomato & Basil Sausages.

I’ve chosen Moroccan Spiced Bakes with red pepper and apricot. Gosh! has gone for the simple and wholesome vibe in the branding, and promises the bakes are not only vegan but also gluten free, soya free and nut free. Does that mean they are also going to be flavour free?

The back of the packet reassures me that ‘Life’s amazing – and you are too!’ so that as well as nourishing my body it seems Gosh! wants to boost my self esteem. I haven’t eaten such cheerful food in a long time. It’s almost off-putting.

However – the proof of the spiced bake is in the eating and after 20 minutes in the oven, served with a salad, I have to say it is very tasty indeed. It holds together well, it is spicy but not salty and it truly is a pleasure to eat. It actually tastes of the chick peas, red pepper and apricot it’s made from, and it does seem like a dish you might have made at home, rather than something processed in a factory.

You can eat them as cold snacks too, so I had the second bake cold with my lunch the following day, and it tasted just as good.

I reckon they would be popular for children, for lunch boxes or picnics, and a bake counts as a one of your five a day. Definitely a worthy addition to the fridge for the days you need something quick and convenient.

The Gosh! goods are not too pricey either, starting from £2.40. I will be trying more soon.
