THE rollercoaster ride that is the music business can thunder-bolt musicians, even when they are on an all time high, as You Me At Six found folliowng a storming Wembley Arena gig, playing to 12,500 devoted fans.

Joining the ‘Big Boys Club’, as lead singer Josh Franceschi put it, often brings its own challenges, as the band switched management companies and, after a tussle over releasing the hit single Reckless, split with their old label.

Josh said: “If somebody had asked us What’s next? after Wembley, the answer would have been: We really don’t know. We had no label, no management and no idea really.’’ But Josh and the guys, Max Helyer, Chris Miller, Matt Barns and Dan Flint, climbed back on board the Big Dipper and recorded a new song for The Swarm, a ride at Thorpe Park, Europe’s tallest winged roller coaster.

“We actually were the first ever band to write a song for a theme park ride and we had to get a real understanding for the ride,’’ said Max.

For their latest album, Cavalier Youth, You Me At Six hired out a Hollywood mansion while they were recording, working alongside Neal Avon.

Max said.”We found this amazing house up near the observatory in Hollywood. We were in the stuido six days a week and then we would have Sunday fun day for a day by the pool, doing jumps off the pool house, drinking, having a barbecue - an experience we will always remember.’’ Now the boys are back at the top, scooping Kerrang awards for Best British band and Best single (Fresh Start Fever) this year but Max believes that although it is an honour to receive such an award, it should not be the aim. “Muhsic is an art and should be an expression of how you want to be,’’ he said.

The young rockers are coming to the Reading Festival to perform on the main stage on Sunday, August 24.

“I was a massive fan of festivals growing up, I started camping at 15 and no matter rain or sunshine I went with my mates for our end of summer party before going back to school or college,’’ said Max.

The musicians come from Weybrdige in Surrey and started the band when they were sweet sixteen, in 2004. “Our name came from making Friday night arrangements to go out and have a laugh,’’ said Max.

Their influences included rock band Blink-182, who are also playing Reading this year. The boys are no strangers to Reading, both the festival and the town, as they recorded their first two albums at Outhouse Studios. Max said: We would always go to a place called Sakura on Monday nights and it would always end my messy.’’ To win a pair of tickets to see You Me At Six at the sellout festival check out our competition - Flicky Harrison
