PIANIST Hamish Brown is making a welcome return to Wiltshire as part of the Swindon Recital Series.

Hamish was born in Marlborough and studied piano with the founder of the Recital Series, Swindon’s Paul Turner, before attending the Royal College of Music in London.

On Wednesday, February 17, at 1.05pm Hamish will be performing at the Wyvern Theatre. As part of his Swindon recital he will be showcasing works from Rachmaninoff. Obviously one of his favoured composers as in 2011 Hamish joined forces with the Southbank Sinfonia for a performance of the first movement of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No 2.

Last year Hamish followed the BBC Pathway Scheme in collaboration with the BBC Symphony Orchestra performing on BBC Radio 3.

Alongside his classical music Hamish is a jazz fan, following in the footsteps of another Wiltshire star, Jamie Cullum. Hamish played with the RCM Big Band in a live streamed concert, under the direction of trumpeter Mike Lovatt, in 2014 and has performed with the Manchester University Jazz Band.

The pianist is also a conductor, a composer and arranger of chamber music. Some of his own work was performed at the New Music North West Festival and his flute concerto, Candy Nebula, was taken up by Jaymee Coonjobeeharry.

Another two heavyweight composers are on the bill for his Swindon recital, Schubert and Dutilleux. Tickets for the recital are £5 or £8.50 with tea and cake from 01793 524481. For more details about the Swindon Recital Series visit www.swindonrecitalseries.org.uk. – Flicky Harrison
