In the world of reggae royalty, Askala Selassie is the uncrowned Empress.

The singer/songwriter will be performing tracks from her debut album, Warrior Empress, at Swindon's fifth Reggae Garden.

Amidst the trees in the Old Town Bowl, Town Gardens in Quarry Road, on Saturday, September 10, Askala will unleash the lioness as she mashes up both reggae and dub tunes.

She learned from the masters as she was recruited at 21-years-old to be one of the backing singers for The Wailers band. She still holds the title of the youngest Wailing sister.

The singer is forging a name for herself sharing the stage with some of the cream of the reggae artists including Rita Marley, Queen Ifrika, The Wailers, Sugar Minnott and The Warrior King and her Roaring Lioness tour of 2014 included Italy's One Love festival, Belgium's Reggae Bus, United Nations of Dub, Bababoom Festival and Spain's Rototom Sunsplash.

The Jamaican singer was baptised in to the Ras Tafari faith and is a staunch believer in empowering women. The songs on her album, she says, are inspired because she was sent by Jah to spread the word that the Jah Kingdom is here.

"I wrote these songs from my heart. The mission is to help nations see, know and value the worth of a woman, and this I do through music,'' she said.

Askala will be joined in Swindon by a line up including

Demolition Man, Michael Prophet, Brother Culture and The Upper Cut Band, Friendly Fire Band, Urban Lions, Terrorist Nuclear and host for the evening is the town's own respected MC Zeeks.

Former acts have included: Swindon's own Erin Bardwell Collective, The Tribe, Horseman, Tippa Irie, Macka B, Solo Banton and the Saxon Sound among others.

The reggae garden is a family friendly festival and the Moshan Grill will again be providing a wide selection of Caribbean cuisine. The Reggae Rangers will be putting on activities to keep the children happy while their parents enjoy the music. There will be the ever popular bouncy castle, face painting, hair braiding and other games.

Bashy Glitter by Mermaid Cove will also be on hand to glitter up the music fans and get them in the festival spirit.

Tickets are £15 plus booking fee. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. More details are available from
