EVEN more silverware has been presented to budding young musicians as the Swindon Music Festival continues this week.

The Instrumental Challenge Cup went to instrumental champion Luke Field, while William Foulstone was presented with The Betty Walters Trophy on Wednesday evening after being awarded 90 marks in the Piano Solo – Grades 3 and 4 category.

The Geoff Walters Trophy was awarded to Timothy Lai who achieved 91 marks in the Piano Solo – Grades 5 and 6 performances, as well as 91 marks in the Modern Popular Piano Solo – 9 and under category too. Zoe Tan was awarded an impressive 92 marks to win the Piano Solo – Grade 7 and above which saw her presented with The Ann Watkins Memorial Cup.

In the keyboard categories Lucy Whitby won the Initial and Grade 1 performances with 89 marks, while Alana-Rose Graham won the grades 2 and 3 category with 88 marks to be presented with The Holmes Music Keyboard Trophy. Josh Rowe won the final category of grades 4 and 5 in the keyboards performances with 90 marks.

In the Piano Solo – Beginners (Pre-Grade 1) Freya Topp achieved 90 marks to win, while Tess Armstrong won The Holmes Music Trophy in the Modern Popular Piano Solo – 13 and under category after the adjudicator gave her 90 marks for her performance.

Sally Armstrong won the Instrumental Solo (Jazz) – Grades 1 – 4 category with 87 before being joined by Beatrix Fooks to achieve 88 marks in the Instrumental Duet – any age performances.

Michael Pogany won the Piano Sonata Solo – 17 and over category with 79 marks, while Will Fieldsend won the Piano Baroque Solo – 17 and over performances with 80 marks.

The Dawn Ball Trophy went to Edward Jones who won the Piano Solo (excluding sonatas) – 17 to 25 category with 90 marks.

Wednesday evening also saw many other trophies awarded for performances, with the Amateur Players Challenge Cup going to Peter McLoughlin who achieved 86 marks, while Natalie Henry’s 89 marks earned her the Jack Mant Memorial Trophy.

Guitarist Lucy Ranger won the Junior Guitar Trophy with 88 marks, while Luke Field was presented with the Senior Guitar Trophy with 87 marks.

Stephanie Harkness also achieved 87 marks earning the Recorder Soloist Trophy, Niamh Potter and Olivia Miller won the Geraldine Eves Trophy with their joint 88 marks, while Joseph Marletta’s 88 marks won the Ken Exton Trophy.

Festival secretary Yvonne Walker said the performances had attracted high praise. “The adjudicator for the last three days, Roy Robinson, said he’d had a most enjoyable time adjudicating instrumental classes at this year’s festival,” she said.

“Classes have been extremely well attended and varied, ranging from piano and strings to wind and electronic keyboard. There has been some wonderful playing. Music teaching and learning is alive and kicking in Swindon.”
