A TOWN-CENTRE DJ rocked the decks to scoop a prestigious music prize last weekend.

Michael Carty, known as MC Ranks, beat seven other music masters to win Best DJ at the Mogul Minded Group regional awards held at Bristol Cricket Club

The veteran DJ, who lives in Manchester Road, has been spinning records for more than two decades and specialises in reggae, soul and urban revival music.

He said: “Music is my best friend, it has always been there for me. I enjoy what I do and I learn something new every day. It brings me joy to make other people happy through music.

“I was more in shock than anything. I was so surprised when I heard my name read out, I couldn’t believe it and it was a very special moment for me.

“I felt very grateful for the opportunity because there were so many people up against me. I definitely didn’t expect to win so I am very thankful.”

He was presented with a plaque in honour of his achievements.

Michael is known across the town’s music scene, he formerly DJ’ed at Destiny and Desire in the former Brunel Rooms.

He has also presented a show on Swindon 105.5 since the community radio station began nine years ago and presents a weekly night at Lava Lounge.

He juggles his music commitments with work as a private hire driver. Michael first learned to DJ in his bedroom before going on to rub shoulders with some of reggae’s biggest stars, including Jimmy Cliff and Mavado.
