LAST Wednesday I popped into a local record shop for a lunchtime treat – not the Co-op hot smoked salmon salad I often treat myself to on a Wednesday lunchtime; this was a free musical treat in the form of a live show from DJ Format & Abdominal.

The hip hop duo were in-store for an intimate lunchtime pop-up gig to promote their new album, Still Hungry, on the way to a show in Bristol that night.

About 30 of us squeezed in to RPM Records on Devizes Road to get some free live music. It was a horrible, wet day outside.

The first five tracks were pretty good and then I had to get back to work but my friend Dean said they got better towards the end.

I am going to nit-pick though. There was this particular lyrical thread in the fifth song they performed – No Time – it was really pedestrian.

Abdominal is lamenting his metabolism’s decline, talking about going for a run, and then describing in some detail the process of making a salad for lunch. A salad. Cutting up the carrots and cucumbers etc (no smoked salmon). A salad. That’s just not very hip hop, is it? I’m not asking for guns and gold chains, dealing crack on the corner or hundred dollar bills. Just no salad, please.

Granted, the song is about not having the time in the day to write lyrics, but don’t just write any old whack material. If your life is so mundane then hang up the mic for a while, maybe get a Segway...
