FLICKY HARRISON looks ahead to a very special production for group

A SWINDON theatre company set about searching for a live band to perform on stage as part of its latest production.

Prime Theatre is marking its 30th birthday this year with a series of celebrations and productions including Punk Rock, which runs from Tuesday, August 1, to Thursday, August 3, at the Wyvern.

The drama, written by Simon Stephens, will play out in front of the audience who will also be seated on stage.

Prime found Swindon band Overload to take on the role of the school band, playing live throughout the show.

The story is based around a group of teenagers in the sixth form of a local grammar school.

A new girl in class tops up the tension already at breaking point amongst the students over exams, sex and peer pressure.

Prime’s artistic director Mark Powell who is directing the play said: “Members helped choose this exciting play that shows modern teenagers with all their highs and lows. The dramatic final scene will stay with people for some time after.”

Laura Goulden will provide the British Sign Language interpretation of the show while in costume and taking part in the drama.

“The play is both funny and tragic and signing both the songs and the action means this should be an extra special experience for everyone,’’ she said. “We have been having a great time in rehearsals.’’

The signed shows are on Wednesday, August 2, and Thursday, August 3.

One of the stars of the show is Benny George, 15, who takes the role of Chadwick. He said: “Having the audience on the stage with us will be exciting and scary at the same time. It has been enjoyable getting to grips with such a brilliant script that tells it like it is in most schools.”

Tickets to see Punk Rock are £15.50 and £10.50 from 01793 524481 or swindontheatres.co.uk.
