Andy Partridge answers readers' questions SWINDON music legend (butchers pronounce it leg-end, he tells us) Andy Partridge kindly volunteered to answer a range of questions on music-related topics from our readers.

He first rose to fame with XTC in 1977 at the tip of the punk explosion and is still a highly respected member of the music community.

Everyone will remember hits such as Sgt Rock (Is Going To Help Me), and Senses Working Overtime and now, after 30 years, XTC and Andy have more than 30 albums to their name.

As well as being a singer, songwriter and guitarist, Andy has been a record producer, run his own label, been a broadcaster on radio, appeared on numerous TV programmes and written songs for other artists, as well as penning film and TV music.

So scroll through the questions and answers at your leisure - you never know, you might learn something!

What's in a name?

Q. Hola Andy:
Is there some copyright over the “XTC” name, because I saw a web site call www.xtc.cl about a brand new energy drink, also there´s a lot of merchandising over it (with the XTC on Wheel covers, t-shirts and so on) maybe you guys are losing some money……..

A. Ricardo,Ricardo, looks nothing like Bridgette Bardot.
Ah the name thing, yes. You see back in 1975 I thought I was being original and modern picking XTC.

I thought it had a future looking pictograph thing about it and of course it was a kind of shorthand or instant ecstacy.

Trouble is all around the world people have since titled their products the same, sports gear, condoms, tyres, drinks, stereo gear etc.,somewhat nabbing our exclusivity. And no,I'm afraid we dont have the copyright or royalties on the drug sales.

It was pointed out to me that it was also the name of a brand of tobacco in the USA at the turn of the 20th century{I have a pack label},so you see nothing is original.

Relax.
