Andy Partridge answers readers' questions SWINDON music legend (butchers pronounce it leg-end, he tells us) Andy Partridge kindly volunteered to answer a range of questions on music-related topics from our readers.

He first rose to fame with XTC in 1977 at the tip of the punk explosion and is still a highly respected member of the music community.

Everyone will remember hits such as Sgt Rock (Is Going To Help Me), and Senses Working Overtime and now, after 30 years, XTC and Andy have more than 30 albums to their name.

As well as being a singer, songwriter and guitarist, Andy has been a record producer, run his own label, been a broadcaster on radio, appeared on numerous TV programmes and written songs for other artists, as well as penning film and TV music.

Give that man a kiss!

Q. Hello Andy,
I usually bow to the superior general knowledge abilities of my husband but is he right on this one? He is a big Can fan and he thinks he heard that your favourite singer is Kenji 'Damo' Suzuki, is he right again or is he barking up the wrong tree?

Best wishes
Pauline.

A. Well Mrs Mitchell, give hubby a great big fat kiss from me and tell him he's partly right.

I actually love BOTH of Can's vocalists, with possibly a very slight preference going to our favourite draft dodging teacher from Harlem,Malcolm Mooney.
Malcolm for his primitive rhythmic croak{eg. SOUL DESERT or YOO DOO RIGHT} and wacky Damo for his magic Engrish psycho babble{eg.HALLELUWAH or PINCH}.

Can were a huge influence on my musical development, especially that throb of JAKI LIEBZEITS drums.I'd never heard anything quite like it.

If theres anybody out there whos not been exposed to them yet buy yourself MONSTER MOVIE and TAGO MAGO and you'll hear where 80% of modern music comes from.
Giant group.
