Annie Mac's Hottest Record In The World, Loveblood, the latest single from Sundara Karma, has caused controversy over its inspiration.

Some say the indie rock anthem is based on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, to commemorate the 400th anniversary since The Bard died. Others believe that the songwriter and front man of the Reading-based band was writing about Oscar Wilde's story, Lord Arthur Savile's Crime. Oscar Lulu himself says: "The theme is taken from fate, love and tragedy all of which are in both plays.''

Loveblood is currently getting a lot of air play on BBC Radio 1 with support from Matt Edmundson, Annie Mac and Huw Stephens, who invited the indie rock musicians to perform at the famous Maida Vale Studios.

"We felt we had made it, a really good feeling,'' said Oscar.

Last year Sundara Karma became one of the bands to watch on the summer festival circuit and this year they are appearing in their home town at the Reading Festival.

Oscar said: "I have a mix of feelings both excitement and horror because it is my home town.''

The band will be appearing alongside names such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foals, Biffy Clyro, Disclosure and Fall Out Boy. Chvrches, Imagine Dragons, The Vaccines and The Wombats.

The festival will be a bit of a tour reunion as Sundara Kara toured with The Wombats.

Oscar said: "They were lovely we learned a lot from them.''

Sundara Karma is taken from the Hindi meaning Beautiful Karma. "We were big fans of Bananarama,'' laughed Oscar.

Joining the singer/guitarist in the band are Haydn Evans on drums, Ally Baty on guitar and Dom Cordell on bass.

Oscar and Haydn were at school together and formed their first band when they were just eight-years-old.

Oscar believes that his love of music springs from his dad, who used to be a DJ.

"Dad was into music and had eclectic taste, everything from Wham to Thin Lizzy, music was always playing around the house.''

To get in the zone before a performance Oscar always has an acoustic guitar in the dressing room ready for a sing-song but no other rituals.

Sundara Karma have just completed their debut album which they recorded in Berlin, Germany and plan to release at the end of the year.

They will be playing songs from the album when they play on Saturday, August 27. For more details visit - Flicky Harrison
