THE 109th annual Swindon Music Festival has continued filling the Arts Centre with tuneful sounds, with 20 trophies presented to worthy musicians and singers.

The classes on Saturday were held at the Arts Centre on Devizes Road, with member of the Friends of Cathedral Music Christopher Daly adjudicating.

Winning the Guitar Solo: Grades 1 - 2 and The Holmes Music Guitar Trophy was Isaac Garvey with 84 points.

James Skinner won the Guitar Solo: Grades 3 - 4 with a score of 86, while Ellen Foster won the Guitar Solo: Grades 7 - 8 also with a score of 86.

The Guitar Duet Shield was presented to Ellen Foster and Simon Crew in the Guitar Duet: Grades 6, 7 and 8 after they received 88 points.

In the Keyboard: Initial and Grade 1 category Ebony Buttery took the top prize with a score of 85, while The Holmes Music Keyboard Trophy went to Alana-Rose Graham in the Keyboard: Grades 2 and 3 category with 85 points, who also won the prize in the Keyboard: Any Grade category with 86 points, while Josh Rowe scored 86 points in the Keyboard: Grades 4 and 5.

In the Harp Solo: Grade 5 and over, Sally Armstrong won with 88 points.

Isty Cole scored 82 in the Strings: Beginners category with 82 points, while The Seth Perkins Cup went to William Harley Smyth for scoring 83 in the Strings: Grades 3 - 4.

Phoebe David-Ward was presented with The Kentwood Trophy for scoring 85 points in the Songs from Shows and Films – 15 and 16 category, while Kitty Pearson and Meghan-Leigh Williams both won the The Nora Gill Memorial Cup for their performance in the Gilbert & Sullivan – 13, 14, 15 and 16 which saw them awarded 84 points.

Harvey Cullis was presented with The Olive England Memorial Trophy for scoring 84 in the Boys’ Folk Song – 14, 15 and 16, as well as the The Wessex Male Choir Trophy again for a score of 84 in the Boys’ Solo – 16 and under (Changed voice).

The Yvonne Walker Trophy went to Reanna Nolan in the Girls’ Solo – 14, 15 and 16 category after she scored 85 points, while Kitty Pearson scored 84 in the Light Opera – 13, 14, 15 and 16 category, earning her The Reg Carter Memorial Trophy. She was also presented with The Don Morse Memorial Trophy for scoring 85 in the Song in Foreign Language, 12 - 16 category.

In the Recital – 13, 14, 15 and 16 contest, Isabelle Tuck won The Peter Cox Memorial Trophy after she scored 87 points.

Ruby Chapman was awarded The Sheila Harrod Trophy for scoring 86 in the Lieder – to be sung in English, 12 - 16 category, while Poppy and Freddie Fox-Thompson took home The Jane Shrimpton Trophy with 86 points in the Duet (Songs from Shows and Films) – 12 and under category.

The JTPTrust Junior Girls and JTPTrust Junior Boys were both named the winners of the Groups - under 13 category with their performances which scored 85.

The George Snook Nostalgia Trophy was presented to Krys Szczepanek who scored 85 points in the Nostalgia – Popular Song (1914 to end of 1940s) category, as well as The Doris James Memorial Trophy for the Mature Class (over 50) with 86 points.

Amber Wollen achieved 88 in the Jazz Song - any voice category which earned her The Mervyn Penny Trophy.

The Phyllis Mann Memorial Trophy went to Mike Viret who achieved 86 marks in the Music Hall Song category, while Catherine Forty’s performance in the Modern Pop Song (1960s to present day) category earned her 88 points and The Gary Beint Trophy.

William and Natalie Forty were presented with The Pauline Grant Memorial Trophy for notching up 90 marks in the Duet: Songs from Shows and Films category.

The Adjudicator, Christopher Daly, said that it was a privilege to be invited to adjudicate at this historic festival. The classes were of a high musical standard throughout his two days. He particularly enjoyed Christ Church as a venue. His thanks went to those who organise this great festival year on year.

The festival continues today with further classes at the Arts Centre, which soloits and chamber musician James Kirby will be adjudicating.

Tomorrow night, from 6.30pm, the Beatrice Plaum Challenge Cup will be held for junior piano players, as well as the Instrumental Championship sponsored by Make Musc Swindon. Admission is £5, or £1 for those aged 16 and under.
