Award-winning folk duo Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin are making tracks to Swindon's Steam Railway Museum as part of their quest to perform in unexpected places.

The Out of the Ordinary Tour sees the duo playing in churches, a cavern, Iron Age roundhouses and other weird and wonderful venues across 10 counties in England and Wales.

Hannah said: “Some of the venues are part of our industrial heritage, like the Great Western Railway Steam Museum in Swindon; then there are mysterious places created for unknown reasons like the Williamson Tunnels in Liverpool – and all human life is in the fabrics of these buildings, from convicts to philanthropists.”

Phillip and Hannah, who scooped the coveted BBC Radio Two Folk Award for Best Duo in 2014, met in 2009 when Phillip was living in a tent in South Devon. His master plan was to become a professional musician, following a sojourn in India studying classical guitar under Pandit Debashish Battachanya in Calcutta.

Phillip and Hannah were both playing for The Roots Union and when the band split continued as a duo until they were spotted by Steve Knightley, from Show Of Hands, while busking on the seafront at Sidmouth Folk Week.

Steve asked them to tour and perform at the Royal Albert Hall and the duo did not look back. Since then they have notched up festival gigs such as Glastonbury and won dates in Canada, Australia, South Africa, France Noway and Japan.

Hannah and Phillip also toured with Seth Lakeman and were asked to sing at the Folk Alliance in Kansas City.

When they come to Swindon on Friday, May 19 they will sing songs from their latest album, Watershed, which is more of a modern day folk tale, songs with a grittier edge compared to the historical themes of their last project, Mynd.
