The Cherry Valentines, a warm up act on TV's The Voice, have launched a new open mic night to encourage new singers and musicians to take their first step towards a career in music.
The open mic is based at The Swan and Faringdon Brewery, Park Road in Faringdon and the duo aim to make it a monthly night from 8pm.
One half of the Cherry Valentines is Paul King who says they are trying to create a supportive and warm atmosphere for all musicians to showcase their talents at whatever level or ability.
He said: “As an experienced live performer, I understand that getting up in front of a crowd to play can be very daunting – especially for those who may not have done it very often. So, my job will be to make the players feel as relaxed and welcome as possible, while also making sure they sound fabulous through our high-end PA system.”
Also available for musicians are high quality microphones and an electro acoustic guitar. The idea is to encourage musicianship, so backing tracks are not encouraged, but performances on acoustic guitars, electric basses, digital keyboards and percussion instruments are all welcome, but due to space restrictions drum kits are not possible.
Paul emphasises that the open mic night is all about showcasing new talent.
“Too many open mic nights are used as a vehicle for the host to showcase their own talents. What we always do at our sessions is make the evening all about the performers,” said Paul.
Support for the performers is also important so anyone who enjoys live music is welcome to attend, it is free entry.
The next two open mic nights are on Sunday October 29 and Sunday November 26. for more details call 01367 241480 or swan@oaktaverns.co.uk -Flicky Harrison
