Mike Willox Quartet Baker Street, Wood St, Swindon The flourishing jazz club at Baker St continues to build on its reputation as a leading jazz music venue in the South West.
This week, it was the turn of the Mike Willox Quartet, an excellent combo of musicians from the Bristol area, appreciated by jazz aficionados and people new to the jazz scene alike.
Mike’s superb piano playing led the quartet into a splendid version of Jimmy Van Hausen’s Like Someone In Love, followed by an up-tempo Autumn Leaves, featuring Jake McMurchie on tenor sax, one of the most talked about musicians in the south west right now.
Jake, a Sonny Rollins-inspired reedman, has recently completed a tour of Europe and the UK, including the famous jazz venue Ronnie Scott's, and at the end of the month his group, The Blessing, tours Canada and the USA.
Excellent bassist Will Harris composed some terrific bass solos, while John Randall, on drums, completed the group. - DAVE KNIGHT
