Kaiser Chiefs create new and boundary breaking tunes, which still have a whiff of homebaking, safe, warm and tasty.

It's no wonder the guys have kept such a huge, loyal band of fans throughout the last 12 years.

Their latest album begins with the title track, a psychedelic siren call that bursts into full Kaiser rock with Bowie-style vocals and synth overtones.

Hole In My Shoe took me back to midsummer and the Kaiser's onslaught of musical magic and madness at the Westonbirt Arboretum. The crowd went crazy for lead singer Ricky Wilson's athletic antics. The track has a huge orchestral backing which is again evident in the other hit single, Parachute, and the rocky ballad Why Do You Do It To Me?

This is predominantly a dance album and the track Good Clean Fun has a summer carnival vibe with a reggae beat. Indoor Firework is another holiday song that showcases the crystal clarity of the vocals, but the abrupt ending may catch out unwary DJs.

Another dance number is Press Rewind with keyboards taking centre stage. Giving more than a nod to the club mixes of the 1980s this is a departure for the Kaisers, but still retains the decisive stamp of the Leeds-based band. Happened In A Heartbeat is back to the more familiar Kaiser sound, indie rock at its best.

High Society has some gritty, grunge guitar behind Ricky's falsetto vocals that match the high of the title, proving his vocal range is as wide as his sense of humour.

Sunday Morning is the stand out track for me with its guitar and vocals evoking the transience in life, that something just out of sight in the mist or just out of reach. It has a mod sound in complete contrast to Still Waiting, which is pure drama ending this much lighter, frothier album on a climatic high. - Flicky Harrison
