THURSDAY, as always, is the night for original music and one of the most interesting line-ups to have graced the parish in a while can be found at The Tuppenny.

The Blunderbuss Press is a strange and quixotic duo who blend Old World alt-folk with New World quirky Americana and sing songs whose lyrics wouldn’t seem out of place on a Bonzo Dog Band album. Support comes from Cursor Major, a band whose accessible indie-pop meets post-punkery has graced Swindon as a full band in the past but who will be rendering their songs into more a manageable, stripped back form on this occasion.

If you want wonky pop and the sort of indie music which isn’t checking its hair in the mirror every 10 minutes, then this is the show for you.

Indie of a more fashionable form can be found at The Victoria as a whole host of local movers and shakers line up behind This Feeling’s club night. These nights are aimed at bringing the newest and most happening bands to a wider audience and before This Feeling resident DJs remind us of great music past, it is the turn of those bands seeking to join that list.

The Sulks paint with a wide, almost neo-psychedelic, sonic palette whilst Shore and GETRZ both thread some deft post-punk references through forward thinking takes on widescreen indie.

The Beehive has a bit of a musical coup with a gig from Phil King. Delicate and often sparse folk, emotive and beautiful music, haunting lyrics and a voice that causes venues to fall silent. No wonder he is a firm favourite of Whispering Bob Harris.

A triple helping of rock is on the cards on Friday. Stop Stop brings its own personal brand of excess to The Victoria. Think 80s glam metal, The Sunset Strip, big riffs...bigger hair, raw grooves, guitar virtuosity and a bag of killer tunes. Glam, bam, thank you mam! Meanwhile Down and Dirty will be at The Queen’s Tap exploring rock music in all its forms from intricate proggy landscapes to three chord boogies and from jazz infused weirdness to slick pop-rockery, they have the lot.

The Rockbudz bring an array of 60s and 70’s rock and roll to The Groves Company Inn.

It’s St Patrick's Day on Saturday, which means time to bang on about the fact that you are actually a 16th Irish, drink Guinness for one day a year and watch mainly the same bands you see around town the rest of the year.

There are a couple of venues who are making a bit more of an effort, however. The Tap and Barrel has an afternoon of Irish Dancing and a Celtic themed disco followed by John Quinn’s country vibes to round things off. The Groves Company Inn will be celebrating that dark age Welshman through the Japanese medium of karaoke.

The Boundary House sees False Gods Muse-esque, cinematic alt-rock take the stage, The Wirebirds unleash their psychedelic blues rock experience at The Brookhouse and Evolution cover rock and indie favourites at The Swiss Chalet. The Brit Pop Boys do exactly what it says on the tin at The Victoria, The Worried Men deliver electrifying, incendiary blues at The Queen’s Tap and Built For Comfort explore more restrained but no less awesome blues pathways at The Greyhound.

The Sweet Chunks band blend folk parody, steampunk, chap-hop, comedy and drinking songs at The Waiting Room. Think Professor Elemental re-imagined as a rock band! This is a real coup for Swindon!

This month’s instalment of Lazy Sunday Afternoon sees the return of The Orient Express playing a spicy mix of Turkish traditional sounds and more western leaning music, archaic musical echoes and sumptuous, emotive folk. Singer-songwriter Eddie Cooke takes the middle slot and as always your gracious hosts Mr Love and Justice get the session underway. That all takes place at Savernake Street Hall.

There is an all day fund raiser for British Lung Foundation at The Plough in Old Town with acts including Nick Felix, Sister Sister, Leon Daye and Drew Bryant and at 20 At The Kings, The Locarno Beat relive the musical highlights of the 60s and 70s.

Finally if Ska is more to your tastes then, The Duke of Edinburgh is your destination and The revolvers are your musical backdrop.
