Get fit for summer

With the summer on its way, we all want to look our best and an aspect of this is often slimming down to get into those lovely summer clothes.

But what about your pets?

With pet obesity on the increase throughout the UK, we are seeing more and more overweight pets in our practice each year, so let's make slimming a joint effort this summer and get those overweight pets on a diet too.

Pet obesity is defined as pets that are at least 20 per cent above their optimal body weight, due to excessive fat accumulation. Owners can help maintain good pet health and reduce the excess weight by using the same techniques that we do - and that means diet and exercise.

An overweight pet is more prone to diabetes, heart failure and joint disease, and that extra weight also puts a strain all their organs, so getting it off doesn't just look good.

It also makes a big difference to your pet's health.

In the last 30 years, pet food manufacturers have improved the health and wellbeing of our cats and dogs through diet. New developments in scientific knowledge mean that manufacturers are also now providing diets that meet pets' needs according to age, size, lifestyle breed and health.

Gone are the days of feeding table scraps to dogs and cow's milk to cats, which we now know is not suitable for them.

Here at Eastcott Veterinary Clinic and Hospital, we want to help you ensure your pet is fit, healthy and the optimum weight, through our free weight check clinics.

These are run five days a week for owners to bring their pets along for a body conditioning score, and we will also give you free advice on diets and exercise programmes.

So, whether you think your pet is carrying extra weight that you would like them to lose for summer, or if you would just like to check that you are following a good diet and exercise plan for your pet, we are here to offer friendly and helpful advice.

Remember that the key to a healthy pet is a healthy diet.

We will:

  • advise on a diet that will provide effective weight loss with no side effects
  • give you an easy-to-follow weight management plan
  • give you an exercise plan to burn calories through exercise and improve fitness levels.

  • For your free weight check, phone the Eastcott Veterinary Clinic and Hospital on 01793 528341 to book your appointment - and remember that during the week they are open from 7am to 8pm.
