Sherlock is travelling back to Victorian times, the show’s creator Steven Moffat has revealed.
The Emmy-winning showrunner spoke about the upcoming special at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, where he confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that it will be a stand-alone one-off episode set in 19th-century London.
“The special is its own thing. We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
“It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it – as we could hardly conceal – it’s Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be a separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”
Steven added that filming on the special, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as detective Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson, is “nearly complete” and he is “happy” with it.
The Victorian episode is expected to air in December, although this has yet to be confirmed.
