JOHN Ford’s 1633 play has scandalised audiences over the centuries, telling the tale of bright young scholar Giovanni and his forbidden passion for his sister, Annabella.

The action begins when Giovanni returns home to Parma from university to find his sister has attracted a number of suitors – and their father is keen for her to marry.

After much discussion with Friar Bonaventura, who tries to convince him to resist his emotions, which are evil, Giovanni eventually confesses the true nature of his feelings to Annabella.

She responds favourably and the siblings consummate their love.

Bloody complications ensue as the various relationships between the characters unfold in this fast-paced tragedy, which, incidentally, Peter Greenaway said inspired his 1989 film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.

Cheek By Jowl’s production, under the directorship of Declan Donnellan, is bright, modern and sexy, lifting the play out of the 17th century and into a lurid and lively 21st century setting. Think Baz Luhrmann’s treatment of Romeo and Juliet and you’re along the right lines.

Imaginatively staged, using just one set, it is brutal, witty and full of surprises and will have you captivated from the word go. It is also simply stunning to look at.

This is theatre at its most exciting and the choice to let it run just short of two hours with no interval makes sure the energy never lets up. It’s a must-see for anyone who enjoys fantastic theatre.
