EMMA DUNN chats to sports hero Tony Jacklin

WINNING The Open Championship is just one of the experiences golfer Tony Jacklin is hoping to inspire the audience with when he shares stories from his career at the Wyvern Theatre tonight.

Tony, who is the most successful European Ryder Cup captain of all time, will be talking about his career, including winning The Open Championship in 1969 and the US Open in 1970.

The evening, hosted by snooker legend Willie Thorne, will also include a Q&A session, a golf swing master-class and a meet and greet.

“I think to some degree I have got stories I can share that might be inspiring to some of the people there,” he said.

“I came from a working class background and I dreamed big. That’s important.

“I hope the show will be an inspiration to people who are able to come along and listen.”

Tony Jacklin CBE is arguably the powerhouse behind European Golf and was responsible for engineering the greatest sporting revolution of the 20th century.

He inspired a generation of golfers including Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle, Seve Ballesteros etc as well as many of today’s stars such as Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Justin Rose.

“I still remember a lot of the thought processes that went into winning some of the majors and Ryder Cups,” said Tony.

“I’m really looking forward to sharing a few stories and telling people about what it felt like at the time.”

The evening will include film clips and demonstrations.

Tony said he will also speak about his time on Strictly Come Dancing.
