Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson starred in the classic illicit love story of Brief Encounter on the big screen but now the iconic movie has been adapted for the stage.

The Clarendon Players are taking on the challenge, working from the 2008 adaptation by Emma Rice, the artistic director of Kneehigh Theatare Company. The movie itself was based on a one act play by Noel Coward entitled Still Life so the Players are going back to the roots of the story.

The 1945 movie is mainly set in the railway station and the Clarendon Players version of Brief Encounter appropriately takes place in Station Road at the Memorial Hall in Royal Wootton Bassett from tonight, Thursday November 13 to Saturday Novemebr 15 at 7.30pm.

Paula Clifford from The Clarendon Players said that the plot is based around Laura Jesson, a respectable suburban wife, and Dr Alec Harvey, an idealistic, married doctor.

She said “They meet by chance in a station refreshment room. Alec and Laura's story unfolds over a course of just a few weeks of winter 1938/39 during which they fall in love. Throughout the play we also watch the lives and loves of the station staff.

"Albert the Station master is wooing Myrtle the refreshment room manageress and Stanley the refreshment seller is keen to court Beryl the refreshment room waitress. In total contrast to Laura and Alec both these couples are free to pursue their love.’’

Tickets to Brief Encounter are £6 and available from the post office in Royal Wootton Bassett or on the door - Flicky Harrison
