WESSEX Male Choir took shoppers by surprise with a flash mob Christmas concert at Toys R Us today.

Dozens of group members wandered around the store, in Oxford Road, pretending to be shoppers before bursting into life with a performance of I’ll Be Home For Christmas followed by the toy shop’s iconic theme.

They then moved to a spot in front of the tills for a set which included Winter Wonderland and Jingle Bells. The performance was to raise money for charitable causes that the group plans to support next year.

Jeff Hannath, from the Wessex Male Choir, said: “That went really well and it was a delight to see the public getting involved and showing support. It was fun being here and raising money for worthy causes.”

Toys R Us were pleased to welcome the group, who have raised £60,000 for Parkinson’s UK since 2007, to the branch.

Kate MaGee, manager, said: “It was brilliant and it was fantastic to have such a great performance and we thank you group for stopping by. They’ve really helped to get us into the festive spirit.”

Katrine Reimers, the choir’s musical director, said: “It was really fun for the guys to do this as it was something different from a regular concert.”

Earlier today, the Wessex Male Choir performed at Nationwide House, in Pipers Way, to support their day of raising funds for the housing charity Shelter.

The group holds concerts throughout the year and hold rehearsals at Abbey Meads Village Centre between 7.30pm and 9pm on Tuesdays.

Katrine said: “We are always extremely keen to welcome new members and will be returning after Christmas on January 6.”
